v2

After playing this game online and in-person for 6+ months with a mixture of the quickstart guide, book assignments and my own written assignments... I decided that my old CO Assignment Generator was GREAT at making ideas and stories -- but really bad at actually playing at the table. It was too disorganized to try and figure out where to find information where and when I needed it!

I spent a long time scouring online until I found the creator for Brindlewood Bay, made a similar, larger game called "The Between" - which features PBTA Victorian-era horror.

I adapted the structure and GM advice from Jason Cordova's material. Version 2 of the CO Assignment Generator is live here on Itch.io and should be MUCH more helpful.

If you're interested in playing a similarly fiction-first styled game to CO, Cordova's got a Backerkit being released soon, with further information here:

I will say -- I do like the lore of Candela Obscura better, ironically because it's much more structured so as a GM I don't have to invent as much. But The Between looks like a great game for players who are able to improvise a lot. The tone is a bit darker for the playbooks, you alternate scenes with the City as a character, and -- there's less dice mechanics. The last bit is a disappointment for me, because The Between is a great story game. However, the Illuminated Worlds system is a lot of fun with the drives and runs a lot faster than Blades in the Dark.

This CO Assignment generator turned into a partial review of the Between! I do love that game even though I play CO and plan on purchasing the full set on backerkit for the different settings and GM advice. I plan to continue publishing supplements with Darrington Press materials though.
